On August 9 2012, Madonna spoke out for gay rights at an MDNA concert in St Petersburg, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s home town, where  a law was adopted to curb homosexual “propaganda.”

Performing in black lingerie with the words “No Fear” scrawled on her bare back, Madonna urged the audience – most wearing pink wrist bands distributed at the door – to “show your love and appreciation to the gay community”.

“We want to fight for the right to be free,” she said.

On June 18 and 19 2012, Madonna was in Florence, Italy, shooting the music video for Turn Up the Radio.  The video was directed by Tom Munro.  Tom had previously directed Madonna’s music video for Give It 2 Me in 2008.   

The video was released on July 16, 2012.

On June 12 2012, Lady Gaga hit back at Madonna after the Queen of Pop made a public dig at her by performing a mash-up of her own Express Yourself and Gaga’s Born This Way during her MDNA World Tour.

Gaga was clearly unimpressed by the stunt and decided to retaliate during a concert in Auckland, New Zealand, telling fans: “You could never invalidate the power of Born This Way.  I don’t want to be your fucking queen, I want to be your friend.”

On April 18 2012, Madonna told NBC’s Harry Smith, “I need to be a tougher mom.”

Juggling a new album that debuted at number one and being a single mother to four kids is not easy, Madonna told Smith, saying she may need to toughen up after photos surfaced of her 15-year-old daughter smoking a cigarette.
