1988 - Herb Ritts 01

On September 26 1988, Madonna began recording the Like A Prayer album in Los Angeles, California with collaborators Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray.

Madonna had begun writing for the album during down time of her Broadway run in David Mamet’s Speed-The-Plow, for which she gave her final performance in late August.

With her marriage to Sean Penn on the rocks, Madonna found herself at a personal and creative crossroads, with plenty to express.

Rock The Vote 1992 by Marina Schiano

On September 23 1992, Madonna was featured in a public service announcement titled The Diva for MTV’s Rock The Vote series.

The three-and-a-half-minute skit was directed by close friend Alek Keshishian (Truth Or Dare), who would later use a similar premise in his television ads for Madonna’s 1999 Max Factor campaign.

On September 22 2017, Madonna released a hilarious video to promote the MDNA skincare line (released at Barney’s in the USA on Tuesday September 26). In the video, directed by David Sabshon (filmed on July 25), Madonna was joined by Instagram starJosh Ostrovsky (commonly known as The Fat Jewish).

Here’s part of the hilarious dialog between the two:

“You know what I think, Josh? Pampering is the key to youth. I spray my face with Rose Mist spray, and I feel like I’m walking through a garden”

Fat Jew responds: “People ask my all the time, why do you look so glowing? Like you’re pregnant. And I say it’s because I mist myself with Rosé all day long.”

When Madonna asks if she can try the Rosé, “Will it send me down a spiral of shame?”

“You’re gonna make some really questionable decisions,” Fat Jew says.

“I’ve been doing that for 33 years,” Madonna points out.

On September 21 1989, Madonna was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for the second time that year (she was also featured on the cover in March 1989).

Herb Ritts took some amazing shots of Madonna for the cover. We’ve shared a few of what we consider to be the best from that shoot. We can’t look at these photos without hearing Cherish in our heads!
