Today in Madonna History: January 28, 2014

On January 28 2014, Madonna joined Miley Cyrus for her MTV Unplugged concert, which was recorded at Sunset Gower Studios in Los Angeles.  For the country-western section of Miley’s show, Madonna and Miley wore bejewelled cowgirl outfits to perform a mash-up of Don’t Tell Me (one of Miley’s favourite Madonna songs) and her own hit, We Can’t Stop.

Miley’s Unplugged concert aired on MTV the next day (January 29 2014).

On January 27 2005, Hairdresser Julien D’Ys released a limited edition 46-page scrapbook documenting the creation of the hairstyles for Madonna’s Re-Invention Tour and the Steven Klein tour book photoshoot.

On January 26 1987, Madonna won Favorite Female Pop/Rock Video for Papa Don’t Preach at the 14th annual American Music Awards at the Scottish Rite Auditorium, Los Angeles, CA.

One of the award presenters, Mister Mister’s Richard Page, would later collaborate with Madonna & Patrick Leonard on the 1994 soundtrack hit, I’ll Remember.

On January 25 1986, Borderline re-entered the UK Singles Chart at #15.

The re-release of the single was loosely linked with the promotion of the European reissue of Madonna’s debut album, which was repackaged in September 1985 with new artwork under the title, The First Album.

After reaching an initial peak of #56 on the UK Singles chart in 1984, the re-release of Borderline proved to be much more successful, peaking at #2 on February 15, 1986.

On January 24 2017, Rhino re-released Madonna’s The Immaculate Collection (her first greatest hits collection) on double vinyl in the USA and Canada as part of their Start Your Ear Off Right campaign. The collection was released on blue/white and gold vinyl and limited to 6,500 copies.

On January 23 2016, Madonna’s daughter Mercy James was the ceremonial Unapologetic Bitch during the first of two sold-out Rebel Heart Tour shows in Miami.  Ariana Grande was the Unapologetic Bitch at the second Miami show.

Madonna stopped the show to present Mercy with a birthday cupcake.  The crowd of 13,234 joined Madonna in singing Mercy “Happy Birthday”.

On January 22 1983, Everybody peaked on Billboard’s Bubbling Under singles chart in the U.S., spending the first of three consecutive weeks at #107. Although the song managed to bubble under for a total of eight weeks, it didn’t gain enough support from mainstream radio to break into the Hot 100.
