Today in Madonna History: April 10, 1985

angel

On April 10 1985, Madonna’s Angel single was released by Sire Records. Angel was the third single  released from the Like a Virgin album.

Written by Steve Bray and Madonna, it was one of the first songs developed for the project and, according to Madonna, was inspired by a girl who is saved by an angel, and she falls in love with Him.

Lyrics:

Why am I standing on a cloud
Every time you’re around
And my sadness disappears
Every time you are near

Bridge:

You must be an angel
I can see it in your eyes
Full of wonder and surprise
And just now I realize

Chorus:

Oooh you’re an angel
Oooh you’re an angel
Oooh you’re an angel
In disguise, I can see it in your eyes

Walking down a crowded avenue
Other faces seem like nothing next to you
And I can’t hear the traffic rushing by
Just the pounding of my heart and that’s why

(bridge)
(chorus, repeat)

You’re an angel
You’re an angel, baby
You’re an angel
You must be an angel

Now I believe that dreams come true
‘Cause you came when I wished for you
This just can’t be coincidence
The only way that this makes sense is that

(chorus, repeat)

You’re an angel
You’re an angel, baby
You’re an angel
You must be an angel, baby

Clouds just disappear

  1. Hit Number 1 in Oz but that was only because it was a Double-a side with Into the Groove. End of year chart for 1985 was Crazy for You at #3, Angel/Into the Groove #2 and (grr) We Are the World at #1

  2. I still like Angel a lot. But the reason for buying the 12 inch in America was for Into the Groove! Such a stupid move on the label to not release ITG as a proper single in the U.S. as it was the most requested song of 1985 on radio.

  3. Nice record but one of warner bros worst moves ever .The fact that they did not not release into the groove as at least a double sided hit was a joke ! Who throws away a number one record let alone the biggest record of the year!

  4. I agree with you guys Warner did this quite often with her music. ITG being the first would’ve made them millions. Later, it was with Nothing Really Matters 1999, and Spotlight 1988, should’ve been singles. They also did this with Beautiful Stranger and American Pie. They, Warner Brothers should’ve made a video for Angel. Gambler should’ve been released also, like Warner International released it.
