On September 11 2000, Madonna’s Music single hit #1 on the Top Canadian Singles chart in RPM magazine. The single spent an incredible nine weeks at #1 on the chart, making it Madonna’s biggest hit during the RPM chart era in Canada.
Music also holds the distinction of being the final song ever to reach the top of the RPM Top Canadian Singles chart, as the magazine ceased publication during the song’s ninth week at #1. RPM served as the voice of the Canadian music industry and its official chart authority for over thirty-five years.
Madonna’s Music album also hit #1 on RPM’s Top Albums chart during the first two weeks of October, 2000.
In an unusual move, Warner Canada chose to issue the Music single commercially in three different CD configurations: a two-track with non-album b-side Cyberraga, a standard CD maxi-single with full-length remixes, and finally as a set of remix edits – something that would more commonly be reserved for radio in promo-only form.
Both the song and much of the album of the same title bore the fruit of Madonna’s first collaboration with French electronic artist, Mirwais Ahmadzaï. His second solo album, Production, released a few months earlier, featured Madonna’s Paradise (Not For Me) – which would also resurface on Music.
Mirwais worked with Madonna collaborators Jean-Baptiste Mondino (Naïve Song) and Stéphane Sednaoui (Disco Science & I Can’t Wait) on music videos for the Production album, while the latter director also photographed its cover. Madonna, meanwhile, selected Mondino to shoot the cover of her Music album and to direct the video for its second single (Don’t Tell Me).
Several years before directing her Fever video, Sednaoui first captured Madonna as a photographer on the set of the Justify My Love video – directed by Mondino.
On August 18 2002, the official poster for Swept Away was released.
The film Swept Away, starring Madonna and directed by her husband, Guy Ritchie, would open on October 11 2002 in US theatres. The movie was initially titled Love, Sex, Drugs, and Money, and was based on the 1974 Italian film Travolti da un Insolito Destino Nell’Azzurro Mare D’Agosto. Adriano Giannini and Bruce Greenwood also starred in the film. In the film, Madonna played a socialite stranded on an island with a handsome, Communist sailor (Giannini).
On August 11 2000, Madonna gave birth to a 5-lb, 9-oz boy, Rocco Ritchie, at 11:59 am at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, Los Angeles, CA.
On April 3 2000, Madonna appeared on the cover of People magazine with the headline, “Madonna’s Surprise: I’m Pregnant.”

When British filmmaker Guy Ritchie dropped by his dad and stepmum’s London home last week, he didn’t waste time with small talk. “Guy just told us straight out,” recalls retired advertising executive John Ritchie. Guy said, “Look, I think I should tell you this: Madonna’s pregnant.”
And so the elder Ritchie, 71, and his wife, Shireen, a charity worker, found themselves at ground zero for the bombshell that the rest of the world would soon hear.
“We’re happy to confirm rumors that we’re expecting a child at the end of this year,” Madonna, 41, and her 31-year-old paramour said in a joint statement issued March 20 from London, where the singer and her 3-year-old daughter Lourdes (nicknamed Lola) share a rented town-house in tony Kensington, about a mile from Ritchie’s home.
The announcement ended rumors that had been swirling on both sides of the Atlantic for months: that Madonna wanted to repeat her favorite role yet—motherhood.
“Are you pregnant? That’s the question everyone wants to hear,” Matt Lauer bluntly asked Madonna in a March 3 Today show interview to promote her recent film The Next Best Thing, about an unmarried woman who becomes pregnant by her gay best friend.
Though her answer was a flat no, Madonna herself fueled speculation when she told an interviewer for Jane magazine earlier this year that she would like to have another child. “I think Lola should have a brother or sister,” she said. “I think she’s incredibly spoiled. She needs a bit of competition.”
And on March 17, Britain’s Mirror, tipped by paparazzi that Madonna had made repeated visits to a London women’s clinic, predicted that a formal announcement of the pregnancy was imminent. When it came, it was with an appeal for privacy. “This is not a public pregnancy,” says Madonna’s publicist Liz Rosenberg. “It’s going to be as private as she can keep it.”
On March 5 2000, The Next Best Thing, starring Madonna and Rupert Everett hit #2 at the box-office in the USA with $5.8 million for its opening weekend.
