Today in Madonna History: September 12, 1987
On September 12 1987, the Who’s That Girl: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack hit #7 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart in the USA.
Madonna had this to say about the music on the soundtrack:
“I had some very specific ideas in mind, music that would stand on its own as well as support and enhance what was happening on screen and the only way to make that a reality was to have a hand in writing the tunes myself… The songs aren’t necessarily about Nikki or written to be sung by someone like her, but there’s a spirit to this music that captures both what the film and the characters are about, I think.”

On September 11 1988, Madonna participated in the Sport Aid 88: The Race Against Time marathon in New York.
“We can make future generations look back on this decade, and remember us as the generation who began to shape a world in which children enjoy a future free from hunger and pain. Please join the Race Against Time and help CARE and Sport Aid make a difference in a hungry child’s life.” – Madonna

Madonna opened her Rebel Heart Tour on September 9 2015, in Montreal, Canada.
Before the first show, Women’s Wear Daily shared some of the costume designs by Gucci, Prada, Moschino, Alexander Wang and Fausto Puglisi.
Alexander Wang commented on the process of selecting costumes:
“For her, the performance comes first. She has to be able to dance and move and feel comfortable in it”
Arianne Phillips also commented on the process:
“Madonna doesn’t really finalize any of the designs until 100 percent of the choreography is set. It’s a real back-and-forth conversation and it’s a brutal process for most fashion designers. You’re hanging in the balance while all the practical aspects are worked out, like the choreography and the quick-changes.”

On September 9 2000, Madonna’s Music single debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales Chart in the USA.
Billboard’s review of Music:
“Music is a stunning enterprise, a ballsy testament to Madonna’s insistence on being a style-setter and one of the industry’s most savvy-and now critically accountable-tunesmiths. Call this one dance, pop, even alternative…listeners will be shocked then mesmerized by this composition, showcasing yet another side of an artist, who after 20 years, continues to be a true industry artisan and the by-the-book definition of evolutionary.”
Today in Madonna History: September 8, 1986
On September 8 1986, Madonna’s third album, True Blue, was certified double platinum (for shipment of 2 million units) in the USA.
Here’s a snippet of Davitt Sigerson’s review of True Blue from Rolling Stone (July 17, 1986):
Madonna’s sturdy, dependable, lovable new album remains faithful to her past while shamelessly rising above it. True Blue may generate fewer sales and less attention than Like a Virgin, but it sets her up as an artist for the long run. And like every other brainy move from this best of all possible pop madonnas, it sounds as if it comes from the heart.
