I still for the life of me can’t figure out how “Express Yourself” and “Cherish” didn’t go to #1 on Billboard’s HOT 100. She’s got several songs that oddly peaked at #2 but really should’ve been #1 hits. “Material Girl” and “I’ll Remember,” come to mind too.
Agreed! Except for maybe Cherish. Good track but I wasn’t surprised that it didn’t hit the top spot. Material Girl still boggles me. It was at the height of Madonnamania. Causing a Commotion is the one that really stands out as a WTF moment to me.
That ridiculous toy soldiers by martika robbed express yourself the number one position and honestly that obnoxious promotion that many of these labels pulled didn’t bode well for many acts martika was soon forgotten and express yourself lives on. Sheps remix was out of control and the video was a game changer !

Hey Warren!-I feel your Billboard pain and Rolling Stone heartbreak! Express Yourself should have been a #1 hit!
