On July 15 1989, Express Yourself peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S.
Express Yourself spent two weeks in the runner-up position, with Simply Red’s If You Don’t Know Me By Now blocking it from the top spot in the first week, and Martika’s lone chart-topper, Toy Soldiers, leapfrogging over it in its second week.
Express Yourself-a solidarity anthem if there ever is one! Madonna Forever in her Detroit brilliance!
The 7 inch single version is so much better than the LP version as with Like a Prayer and Keep it Together. I feel like every song on this amazing record could’ve been a single with the exception of Act of Contrition. I think she should’ve included an intro prayer leading into the album while Act of Contrition lead the listener out of the album. 31 years has passed since the release. Time flies!
