On June 28 1986, Madonna’s Papa Don’t Preach debuted at #42 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was released on June 11.
Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine said that “with songs like Papa Don’t Preach, Madonna made the transition from pop tart to consummate artist, joining the ranks of 80s icons like Michael Jackson and Prince.”
I remember “Papa Don’t Preach” was such a big deal back in 1986. The video’s world premiere on MTV was an event. Between the controversial song and video, then Madonna’s new look which was really surprising back then, Madonna was every where. I was just starting high school and she was wildly popular back then. It was a fun time to be a fan.
Yes it was a fun time to be a fan of Madonna! 1986 was the year she took control of her destiny!
She became an icon with the release of Papa Don’t Preach and the True Blue album! Her 1st major reinvention.
