On June 23 1990, Madonna’s I’m Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy hit #2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart in the USA.

After the filming of Dick Tracy was complete, Madonna began work on the film’s soundrack, with songwriter Stephen Sondheim, producer Patrick Leonard and engineer Bill Bottrell. She also worked with producer Shep Pettibone on the album’s first single, Vogue. The album was recorded within three weeks in California.

  1. Hey Trey! I agree with you-I’m Breathless is overlooked, underrated but also brilliant! Some of Madonna’s best vocal performances are on this record-He’s a Man, Sooner or Later, tour de force ballad Something to Remember and immortal #1 hit Vogue. Record proved beyond a doubt that Madonna was-and is-here to stay!

  2. She looks so hot on this album cover and on the inside sleeve in that low-cut gown. I know I had this cassette back in 1990/1991, but I never added it to my ipod. I bet I haven’t listened to it since then. It’s definitely underrated, but it doesn’t have songs that I would listen to over and over. It’s a testament to her popularity that she could release an album of 1930 torch songs and have a hit on her hands.

  3. This is one of Madonna’s best studio albums which now people say is a soundtrack, however it is and always will be her 5th studio album because 1) there is already a soundtrack for the film Dick Tracy and 2) All the songs on the album are by Madonna with an exception of 3 which were incorporated into the film! Sooner or Later, More and What can you Lose! I believe Now I’m following you appears on the soundtrack for Dick Tracy with another singer and a more 30s version! Hence, making Madonna’s studio album total 14 and not 13!
