On May 13 2008 Madonna scored her seventh Billboard 200 #1 album in the USA with Hard Candy. The achievement broke a tie with Janet Jackson and Mariah to give Madonna sole ownership of the #2 spot of all-time among female artists. Only Barbra Streisand, with eight #1 albums had more.
Hard Candy has some danceable moments-Candy Shop, Give It to Me and Heartbeat among them-but the real golden songs are the relationship ones-Miles Away, Incredible, Devil Recognize and Voices-Madonna’s sadness and tears-are at the heart of Hard Candy. A wonderful album by Madonna!
Not my fave of M’s albums by any stretch — but still par excellence for what it is, a throwback to old-skool R&B-pop with a modern sheen. “4 Minutes” is irresistible, for sure. And “Miles Away” is amongst M’s best pop-ballads, IMO.
Hey Rob-when Madonna is sad, she is golden!
