On September 8 1983, Madonna’s Lucky Star single was released in the UK. Although Lucky Star was released promotionally as a double A-side with Holiday in the US in September 1983, it was not released commercially in North America until August 1984 as the final single from the Madonna album.
On September 7 1983, Madonna’s Holiday was released in the USA. The hit single eventually climbed to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Holiday was Madonna’s third single after Burning Up (her second) and Everybody (her debut single).

On July 13 1985, Bette Midler introduced Madonna at Live Aid’s charity concert in Philadelphia:
“I want you to know I have no idea why I was asked to introduce this next act — because you all know, I am the soul of good taste and decorum. However we are thrilled to be able to introduce to you today a woman whose name has been on everyone’s lips for the last six months. A woman who pulled herself up by her bra straps and has been known to let them down occasionally.”
Madonna was happy to tell the global audience of 1.9 billion viewers: “I ain’t taking off shit today.”
On April 9 2015, Madonna performed Bitch I’m Madonna on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Madonna also made her stand-up debut and performed Holiday with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots (using classroom instruments).
On February 11 1984, Madonna’s self-titled debut album, Madonna, debuted at #85 on the UK albums chart, just as Holiday hit #7. It fell off the chart the following week, but re-entered at #55 on February 25. The album was re-released in Europe in July 1985 with new artwork, re-titled The First Album. A 2001 international remastered edition of the album restored its original artwork and title in all markets.
On January 27 1984, Madonna performed Burning Up and Holiday on the UK television program, The Tube. The show was broadcast live from The Hacienda club in Manchester.
Malcolm Gerrie, executive producer of The Tube, has been quoted as saying that the show paid for Madonna to travel to Manchester because Warner Bros. didn’t yet consider her as “a priority artist” and weren’t willing to foot the bill.
On November 28 2000, Madonna performed a mini-set at London’s Brixton Academy. The show was part of the Don’t Tell Me Promo Tour, which began only two months after the birth of her second child, Rocco, and consisted of a few small club dates as well as television performances and interviews to promote the second single from her Music album. Aside from the promotional aspect, Madonna also used the club shows as an opportunity to test the waters for performing live shows again following a seven-year hiatus from touring. The Brixton gig closely mirrored her set at New York’s Roseland Ballroom several weeks earlier, with one notable exception being the addition of Holiday to the UK set-list.
